By All Means Do Not Do This!

Another Great Year digital Birthday card

Supplies: MDS software digital download (130646), MDS software disc (130647), or 30-day Free Trial of MDS (130910), Another Great Year Stamp Brush Set (137359), Be Yourself Designer Series Paper – 8 from Be Yourself May Kit (133426), Labels Collection Punch 1 (129336)

Oh, my goodness! Let me tell you…do not change project size/type of a digital project if you have a paint layer on the project! What a mess! All I did was to change from a landscape to a portrait orientation. The stamped image became much smaller and the paint layer became much bigger! I was able to salvage my painting by resizing both the stamped image and the painting until they matched up again but it took a lot of trial and error to get the correct sizes.

I didn’t get my usual Terrific Tuesday blog post done yesterday. Ron had an eye appointment in Seattle so we took extra time to have lunch with out daughter who lives there. We had a great time visiting and catching up. By the time we got home, those who live on the east coast were already heading to bed. However…there were some terrific downloads for us from Stampin’ Up! I just love it that we can get new things on a weekly basis at a price point that is affordable on a weekly basis. I was excited to see the Another Great Year stamp set being offered in digital form. This stamp set was introduced in the Spring catalog in the traditional hands-on forms and I have grown to love it from seeing all the great examples being created with it.

Now it is available in digital form. Why is that so exciting? Well, for a couple of reasons. First, with MDS files, they don’t retire. They are available to purchase indefinitely. Secondly, this particular stamp brush set is a .svg file which means that it can be enlarged or reduced to fit any sized need. So, you could take the big Happy Birthday to You greeting and make it small enough to fit into a 1″ circle punch or you could enlarge it enough to be a banner for a birthday party. In that case you might have to take the file to a print shop that can print out posters or you could attach your computer to an e-cutter to print it and cut it out. With the traditional stamp you are limited to just the 2 1/2″ x 4″ size of the stamp.

See…MDS fits into traditional paper-crafting as well as digital creating. If you haven’t given MDS and digital crafting a try yet, you are missing out on a lot of fun and convenience. Contact me for more information and to answer any questions you may have.

St. Patrick’s Day Pop ‘n Cuts card

We made a St. Patrick’s Day Pop ‘n Cuts card yesterday at the Craig/Klawock Stampers monthly club meeting. Most of the time I see something that gives me an idea which I file in the back of my mind but this time, I was at a loss for a St. Patty’s Day idea so I actually did a Pinterest search for a St. Patrick’s Day card. I found this card by Susy Miller.

St. Patrick's Day card by Suzy MillerHer punch art Irishman puts a smile on my face each time I look at him so I used her idea to create this Pop ‘n Cut card.

Happy Valentine’s Day! – Mailbox Love Notes

Mailbox Love Notes designer series paper

Supplies: MDS software digital download (130646), MDS software disc (130647), or 30-day Free Trial of MDS (130910), My Digital Class Mailbox Love Notes (136780)

My business coach challenged us to write a post about our favorite Valentine saying or verse. This is my all time favorite. There is a story behind it.

Years ago, we lived in a small town in Western Montana. I picked out a Valentine with this saying on it to give my husband on my way home from work in a neighboring town. On Valentine’s Day he handed me the card he picked out for me. When I opened it, I started laughing. It was the exact same card I had picked but he had bought his in the town we lived in. Obviously we have a similar sense of humor. I guess that is why we will be happily celebrating our 50th anniversary this year.

I am sure I have that card in my ‘Memories’ file at home but did not think in advance of finding it, scanning it and sharing the card with you before we left home to come back to Craig, Alaska, for a visit.

So….I used my trusty MDS program on my computer to create a digital card that is similar to the original card. I searched the available downloads in my online store and in my download library and did not find a stamp brush set or embellishment that was a pair of lips.

I used the ‘Add Line‘ tool under the ‘freeform’ button to add two circles and the creases on the sides of the mouth. I pulled and pushed the handles on the circles to make the lips shape and the puckered opening. Then I colored the lips Real Red with the freeform brush. I created the message with a series of text boxes. The background is design 3 of the Mailbox Love Notes Designer Series Paper found in the My Digital Class Mailbox Love Notes (136780). I have included below, images of what is included in this digital download. Click here to place your order for the class. Even if you are a seasoned designer, the content files in the class are worth the price of admission.

MDS Monday – Filling a punch with own dsp

Putting your own designer series paper in a punchDid you know you can create your own designer series paper and fill a punch with it? For the MDS Monday Challenge 52, we were to use music somewhere on our card. Since Valentine’s Day is this week, I wanted to create a valentine to meet this challenge. Every time I have been separated from my husband and he comes back, my heart sings for joy at his return, even after 50 years of life together. I wanted to express this to him through this valentine.

In keeping with the challenge, I wanted to fill the heart punch with music. I could not find any designer series paper in MDS that was music so I created a sheet myself by repeatedly copying and pasting the Music Notes stamp brush set (125765) down the second page of my card with a Regal Rose background. I then saved just the second page as a jpeg to my desktop. I went back to the front page of the card where I had added the Full Hearts Punch and filled it with the ‘photo’ I had created when I saved page two as a jpeg. Now I had the music notes in the heart. To get the music to rotate with the heart shape I had to be sure to click the box that allows this to happen. (The box is found when you double click on the punch.)

As you go through the supply list below, you will see I added Regal Rose grosgrain ribbon recolored with Regal Rose. Today I  was mystified why I would do that. So I went back to the project, added another Regal Rose ribbon and found it is darker than what I wanted. For some strange reason, when I recolored it with Regal Rose, the result was a lighter shade of Regal Rose. It created just the color to match the Pinking Hearts border punches (122134) which had been colored using the picker to get one of the colors of the Mailbox Love Notes designer series paper. It pays to experiment!

I am going to print out this card front and make a hybrid card to give my honey. I know he will love it. Send me a picture of a project where you add your own designer series paper to a punch and I will share it on my blog.

It’s Raining Hearts – Tags 4 You

Hearts a Flutter and Gorgeous Grunge Flip cardHearts a Flutter and Gorgeous Grunge Flip Card

It’s raining hearts! I made this card last fall as part of a series of cards using the Tags 4 You stamp set. The stamp set, which was in the Holiday catalog, was thankfully carried over through the spring. Other stamp sets used in this card are Hearts a Flutter and Gorgeous Grunge. I used the wonderful Thinlets Label Card die, the Label Bracket Punch and the Hearts Collection Framelits to do my cutting. The I [heart] you is part of the Thinlits Label Card set. Small Rhinestone Basic Jewels add a touch of bling to finish off the card.

Thinking about Valentine’s Day, do you realize that it is only eleven days away? Oh my gosh! If you are as great a procrastinator as I am, we really have to get busy creating and getting Valentines mailed to our loved ones and friends. Hmmm…..!

Baby Pop-up Box Card

Baby Pop-up Box CardI love making these pop-up box cards! They are easy to make but can take a lot of time depending on the amount of embellishments you add to the card. However much time you spend, the card is sure to surprise and please the recipient.

I used a mixture of current and retired supplies on this baby card. The stamp sets are the retired Bundle of Joy set, the Easy Events set and the balloons came from a long-retired frame set. I used Pink Pirouette cardstock (111351) and a Blushing Bride pattern from the 2013 – 2015 In Color Designer Series Paper Stack (130136) for the base of the card.

For a free tutorial on how to make this type card, sign-up for my mailing list. Those of you who are on my mailing list now, I am moving it to a new provider and you have to re-subscribe.  I am excited and thankful that many of you have already re-subscribed. Terrific Tuesday – Sketched Birthday

Sketched Birthday digital cardWhoohoo! I have seen so many sweet birthday cards created traditionally with the hands-on Sketched Birthday stamp set that I almost added it to my collection. But…now I don’t have to because Sketched Birthday is one of the wonderful digital downloads today. You can check out the rest of them and order here.

I really love the soft spring-like colors in the Be Yourself May Digital Kit and used two of the beautiful designer series paper patterns from that kit on this card. The background is one pattern and the layer that is stamped on is another.

I added the little grosgrain bow in the upper left corner for an accent. The download does not have any of the colors in the designer series paper so I recolored it. I started with a white bow but could not come up with a color that coordinated well with the paper. When I used Pool Party or Soft Sky to recolor, you could barely see any color. So I chose a River Rock bow because I knew my desired color would have a green tint to it and River Rock has a hint of green. I used Coastal Cabana to recolor and am delighted with the result. So…when recoloring an embellishment, choose a darker colored embellishment and then recolor it.

Now, Tuesday is also when Stampin’ Up! announces the new Weekly Deals. Check them out! For more information about them and to order them, click on the photo.

Love You to the Moon

There is a children’s Alaskan book by Barbara Lavalle titled Mama Do You Love Me? In the book mama says “I will love you to the moon and back.” I love that book and when I saw the name of this stamp set, I had to have it! The stamp set is perfect for Valentine’s Day as well. This is one of the cards I created using this set.

Love you to the Moon stamp setIt is really hard to get a good photo with that highly reflective Gold Foil Sheets. I would have liked for all of the gold to be shiny but had to settle for this photo. Imagine the color of a big harvest moon as it rises over the horizon. That is the color I was going for with the gold foil sheet. I used black Stazon ink to stamp the image on the gold. Then I cut out the moon with my Paper Snips.

Check out these great images in this Love You to the Moon stamp set! I will be sharing more cards using this stamp set over the next few weeks so keep coming back for new ideas.

Petite Flowers Birthday Card

Petite Petals handmade birthday card

The new Celebrate the Everyday Stampin’ Up! catalog is here and I will be sharing some of my favorite items from this catalog with you over the next few days. One of the things that especially excites me is when Stampin’ Up! creates a stamp set and matching punch. The Petite Petals stamp set is one example. These flowers measure just under 1″ across and are perfect for adding little touches as on the card above or on a tag. You can see the different designs on the petals in the photo below.

Petite Petals stamp setThis stamp set gives you unlimited possibilities as you change out the colors and patterns of the flowers and the punch eliminates tedious cutting out the flowers by hand.

Did you notice the designer series paper in the background? It is from another favorite of mine in the new catalog. The Watercolor Wonder Designer Series Paper has beautiful, soft yet cheerful colors in delightful designs. Look for more samples of it as I share projects over the next few weeks.

I have to apologize to you. Tuesday I forgot to include a link to the new Weekly Deals. I wasn’t sure Stampin’ Up! would continue offering these deals in the new year but they are. Yay for Stampin’ Up! This is an awesome company! I have pictured the deals below. Just click on the image to be taken to the place in my online store to order them. Life is good no matter what the circumstances when you walk with God so I wish you to walk with God every day and find the good in each day. May 2014 be a great year for you and your family.!

Did you know that you can turn a digital card into a traditional card by printing out just the card front, mounting it on a card stock base, and then adding embellishments? A couple of weeks ago I designed this digital card for a MDS Monday challenge. You can see it here. Today I am sharing the hybrid version of the card. Unfortunately, the scanner doesn’t pick up all the sparkle of the little rhinestones very well. It is so sparkly in real life.

Terrific Tuesday – Punch Art digital Christmas Card

Digital punch art Christmas card

Today is an extra special Terrific Tuesday because it is Christmas Eve! Christmas Eve day can be quite hectic with all the last minute shopping, gift wrapping, and baking. My wish for you today is that you will stop all the busy-ness this evening to spend some time reflecting on Christ’s birth and how it changes the way we relate with God and each other. Wherever you are tonight, may you be filled with peace and wonder at the miracle given to the world.

I created the artwork above a year or two ago as a challenge to myself to use MDS punches to CASE a traditional punch art card. My original post is here and the CASEd card here.

Oh, yes, the other two reasons for Tuesdays being special. First, we get new downloads for MDS. View and order them here.

The other reason is that we get a new group of Weekly Deals. Stampin’ Up! hasn’t said if this program will continue into the new year so we may have only one more chance after this to take advantage on great savings. Check out what is on sale this week then click on the images to choose and order the ones you want.

Christmas Card from Japan

handmade Christmas Card

Years ago, we hosted an exchange teacher from Japan for the school year. It was such a great experience for both us and him that we have stayed connected ever since. This is his Christmas card for us this year. I love how he used pieces of thin foam packing material for the leaves of the tree. That is so creative! It looks like the tree is covered with snow and some is falling down at the base of the tree. I am going to hang on the the packing material in the box he sent as I can just see this on an evergreen tree. Look for a post soon of a card I make like that.

I don’t know for sure what the Kanji says but inside the card he wrote Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Happy Mistake – Festive Flurry

Sometimes a mistake can turn out to be even better than what a stamper had planned. In this case, it is not better than the original plan but definitely a good discovery. I was working on my Christmas cards. One step in the process was to stamp the Festive Flurry images on the Silver Foil sheets and emboss with Heat & Stick Powder, then sprinkle silver glitter over the images. All was going well until I took a break for the day. The next time I worked on them I grabbed the little jar that was at hand and sprinkled the powder over the images. I was mystified for a moment or two that the glitter wasn’t sparkling like usual. Hmmm….THEN I looked at the jar! I had picked up the silver embossing powder instead of the glitter. Oops! I decided to go ahead and heat emboss the images and was pleased with the end result.

Festive Flurry Christmas card
What do you think? Don’t the snowflakes look like they have been crocheted with silver thread? The lumpiness of the Heat & Stick Powder created a different texture to the heated silver embossing powder. Fortunately, I only had done 6 of these before I discovered my mistake. Here is the original card. Oh yeah…I also forgot to check if I had enough of the Pool Party Seam Binding ribbon and ran out of it. Fortunately, the retired Baja Breeze pleated ribbon I had left over works well too.
