MDS Monday – Using the Align feature of MDS

Digital card using Watercolor Wonder and Gingham Garden Designer Series Paper

The challenge for this MDS Monday challenge was to create a card using the Align feature of MDS. This feature is an easy shortcut when you want different elements on your project to be lined up. You can access it two ways – either in the ‘arrange’ pull-down menu at the top of your computer screen or by right clicking on the objects you want to line up. See the screenshot below to see all the options available with this wonderful tool. screenshot of the align feature of MDS On this card, I used the ‘align’ feature to center the piece of Watercolor Wonder Designer Series Paper both vertically and horizontally on the card. I also used it to center the greeting label horizontally. I selected all three flags and used the ‘align’ to space them evenly horizontally and to line the tops of them up. If you haven’t been using this feature, I urge you to do so. If you have questions or need help, don’t hesitate to call me or email me. I am happy to help. :o) Supplies used in this card:MDS software digital download (130646), MDS software disc (130647), or 30-day Free Trial of MDS (130910) Background    Card Stock/Kiwi Kiss Stamps Natural Composition Overlays (130855) – 11, Color = 0,0,0 Cheep Talk (118834) – hello there, Color = 0,0,0 and talking bird recolored with coloring tool Punches 1.25 Square Punch,  Filled with:Watercolor Wonder Designer Series Paper (137077) – 5 Valentine Love – flag (from Valentine Love Ensemble (133327),  Filled with: Gingham Garden Designer Series Papers (134853) – 3, 6, 11 Order the supplies you need to create this project by clicking on the links above or visiting my online store.

Glimmer Kit digital card

Supplies: MDS software digital download (130646), MDS software disc (130647), or 30-day Free Trial of MDS (130910); Stamps – Natural Composition Overlays (130855); Background – Whisper White card stock; Embellishments – Glimmer Kit (137342)

This Terrific Tuesday we have a very Terrific digital download! If you are like me and love Glimmer paper, you will go crazy for the new Glimmer Kit (137342)! See how easy and elegant the card above is? All I did was add a Natural Composition Overlay to the background and color it Very Vanilla with a Smokey Slate drop shadow. I reduced the opacity of the stamp to about 50%. Then I added the two elements from the Glimmer Kit. Done!!!

You can also recolor the elements in the Glimmer Kit and in the Glimmer paper. I have created another card for you from this kit.

This time I recolored the gold wreath and Hello with Gumball Green color. I added two of the scallop borders, changed them to vertical and did a mirror image on one of them to create the scalloped embellishment. Here are all the elements you get with this digital kit

Washi Wednesdays – Gingham Garden Washi Tape

Label Love with Gingham Garden Washi TapeI’m starting a new recurring posting on Wednesdays called Washi Wednesday. Washi tape is a semi-transparent tape that is repositionable. You can easily tear off the length you want by hand. It has been popular in the paper-crafting market for several years and this year, Stampin’ Up! developed their own designs of washi tape prints to coordinate with our wonderful designer series papers. If you are like me, you like the washi tape but wonder what to do with it except to use it as just tape. On Washi Wednesdays I will share various ways to use this great product.

Today I have a card where I used the Gingham Garden Washi Tape (129314). I put down the yellow gingham tape, then the red tape, and finally the flowery tape. This gives the appearance of a woven pattern. Using the Washi tape is an easy way to make stripes on your card. If you have different ways to use your washi tape, send me an e-mail and I’ll share your idea here.

Supplies:
Stamps: Label Love (130622-c, 130619-w)
Paper – Pistachio Pudding (131294) and Whisper White (100730) card stock
Ink – Melon Mambo (126948)
Other – Artisan Label Punch (130920), Gingham Garden Washi Tape (129314)

How do I cut layers?

Triple Time Card

Supplies:
Stamp set – Swallowtail (129216-c, 131943-w)Card stock – Whisper White and Baked Brown Sugar
Ink – Coastal Cabana
Other – Baked Brown Sugar 3/8″ Ruffle Stretch Trim (130022)

Q:  I love the layered look like the card above but don’t know how to cut the different layers. Can you help me?

A:  I am happy to help you. When I cut my layers, I generally cut each layer either 1/4″ or 1/2″ smaller. For an example if the card base is 5 1/2″ x 4 1/4″ when folded, the next layer I cut would be at 5 1/4″ x 4″. If I wanted another layer on top of that, I would cut it at 5″ x 3 3/4″. So…whatever size the layer, if you want a mat behind it that is 1/8″ wider and longer, cut it 1/4″ wider and longer. For a 1/4″ border around a layer, cut the mat 1/2″ wider and longer. If you have more questions, don’t hesitate to contact me at sue@soggystamper.com or give me a call.

It’s MDS Monday and a new sketch using Tape

The sketch for today uses tape to attach the main image to the background.MDSM46 card sketch

I started with Washi Tape from the Sent With Love Kit (132914) and Crisp Cantaloupe background. Then I began looking for an image that would fit the rectangular area. I found the saying ‘winter wonderland’ from the Chat Room Occasions stamp brush set which fit the space perfectly but the tape and background didn’t. So I decided to add a winter photo to the card and used a frosty looking background from the Winter Frost designer series paper. That set the color for the tape. I used the global search feature to check out all the different tapes I had in my MDS library and decided this one from the Fall Memories November Kit had the perfect pattern. It reminds me of wind-sculpted snow. I used the color picker feature to recolor the tape to match the color of the background. Then I added a tape from the Downtown Grunge Photobook Template because the color was just perfect. This card was not at all like what I started out to create but the process took over…I love it when that happens…and I love the end result. See for yourself!

I might add that this picture is one my DIL took of their yard in the Boston area last winter. You wouldn’t find such an accumulation of snow where we lived in Craig, AK, or here in Mount Vernon, WA.

Love Photopolymer Stamps?

Photopolymer stamps? What are they, you ask? Photopolymer stamps are a type of totally clear stamps that Stampin’ Up! has started offering. Stampin’ Up! spent a lot of time researching for the best photopolymer material to make these high quality clear stamps. A benefit of the clear nature of the stamp is that you can see when you have enough ink on the stamp and you can see exactly where the image is being placed. They are really sticky so they don’t fall off the clear acrylic blocks like the clear mount stamps sometimes do but they are easy to remove for storage.

Today I want to introduce you to two new stamp sets that are particularly designed for Christmas. The first set, Christmas Tagables (134623), is a grouping of stamps for tags. Check them out. Click on the image to view them at full size and place your order.

Christmas Tagables

The second set is Endless Wishes (133455). I love this set as it has a variety of words on separate stamps so you can create your own greeting. Just imagine…unlimited possibilities to match your imagination! The set also includes three beautiful snowflakes.

There are only 10 more Saturdays until Christmas. Have you started your Christmas cards yet? Maybe tone of these sets is the one to get you going. Order it today.

Terrific Tuesday – Truly Grateful

Truly Grateful

Today is another Terrific Tuesday! Well, sort of. Digitally wise it is great because we get new downloads. You can view and order them here. I have been eying the Truly Grateful stamp set in the Holiday catalog trying to decide if I would use it enough to justify purchasing it. Now it is available in digital form. Yay! I discovered that the stamps are strictly line stamps and to not have the background show through, I placed punches behind the images. The theme of the card is Grateful for… and I added the ‘You’ because I am indeed truly grateful for you, my faithful readers.

The thing that makes the day less than terrific is that my darling little dachies were attacked by a couple of big dogs that should have been on leashes or chained up and weren’t. I didn’t see them until they were on top of the pups. Little One got bit, got loose from her collar and high-tailed it out of there. I was so scared that I wouldn’t be able to find her but she was waiting at the steps of our trailer when Scout and I got back. We spent the rest of the afternoon at the vet getting her checked out. She is going to be fine but is really sore tonight. I feel so sorry for her. However, I am truly grateful that she wasn’t seriously injured.

Now that you have read this blog post, leave a comment below about what you are truly grateful for. We might as well get practiced up on being grateful before Thanksgiving. :o)

Supplies:

MDS software digital download (130646), MDS software disc (130647), or 30-day Free Trial of MDS (130910)

Stamp brush sets – Truly Grateful (134928), Natural Composition Overlays – 9 (130855)

Other – 1.25 square punch, circle punch (come with MDS), Early Espresso 1/4″ Grosgrain ribbon (118851) and Early Espresso 1/4″ Grograin Ribbon knot (118852)

2013 Stampin’ Up! Convention Swap Cards

Today I want to share with you some of my favorite cards I received in the SUDSOL swap I participated in at convention this year. SUDSOL stands for Stampin’ Up! Demonstrators Sharing On Line and is a demo only group. Each year at convention we have a mega card front swap.

By the TideThis card was created by Jan Grant using By the Tide (131910-w, 129120-c). I love the way she used the banners to ground the sea shell image. The coral stamp on the background is really subtle and gives texture to the background.

Field Flowers

Betty Kincannon created this lovely card using the Field Flowers stamp (128583-w, 122762-c). I love the way she used the negative space of a punched out Labels Collection Framelits Die (125598) to sponge around the stamped image.

Flowering FlourishesKivonne Tucker used the Flowering Flourishes stamp (131998-w, 126367-c) on this card along with the Large Scallops Edgelits (127019) and the Delicate Designs embossing folder (127023). I will have to go back and take a second look at the Flowering Flourishes stamp set. I have been overlooking it.

Mosaic punch cardJulie Gass used the Mosaic punch (131267) and Quatrefancy Specialty Designer Series Paper (130141) to make this striking card. Notice the addition of a little bling on a couple of the punched designs.

Epic Day This and That designer series paperThis is the last card for today. I really like the way Denise Donald used the strips of Epic Day This and That Designer Series Paper (130814) on the diagonal. Perfectly Penned (128703-w, 122892-c) is still a favorite greeting stamp set of mine.

Visit my online store to order any of the supplies used in these cards. I appreciate your business.

Extreme Surfboard MDS card

sketch on Create With Connie and Mary

I love this sketch for challenge 263 on Create with Connie and Mary and I challenged myself to create a card with this sketch using MDS. I am really excited how the card turned out.

Extreme Surfboard MDS card

How did I get the stamped image cut into four parts? I opened a 4.25 x 5.5 greeting card in MDS. On the first page I added four photo frames and sized them the way the sketch was. Then I grouped them. On the second page of the card, I added the Extreme Surfboard stamp and resized it to fit. Then I saved the second page as a jpeg to my desktop. Next I went back to my grouped photo frames and dragged the second page into the frames. Voila…it was spread out across all the frames. I had fun choosing a greeting to fit the extreme stamp, and added Baker’s Twine for embellishment. I have a thing about naked backgrounds in MDS so I added the chevron overlay and changed the color to Baja Breeze to give a subtle texture to the Pool Party card stock.

I love playing with MDS and challenging myself to recreate traditional cards with MDS. If you are ready to join in the fun of creating with MDS, you have several options for ordering. I have listed them below. Just click on one of them to go to my online store and order. MDS is a great bargain at only $19.95. Included in this bargain is my expertise and tutoring. I am available and ready to help you learn to make exciting digital scrapbook pages and greeting cards.

Supplies:

MDS software digital download (130646), MDS software disc (130647), or 30-day Free Trial of MDS (130910)

Stamps – Extreme Surfboard (124218), Fantabulous You (129920) also comes with MDS, Decorative Overlays – chevron (129880)

Halloween Label Thinlit Card

Best of Halloween stamp set  Witches' Brew Designer Series Paper
In this post on Wednesday, I shared a card and a video using the new Label Card Thinlit die. Here is a Halloween version of the flip/flop card the Thinlits die created. I know…it is a little early for Halloween. In fact, my husband’s response when I showed him the card was, “It isn’t even Labor Day yet!” In the same order as the Thinlits die I also received the Best of Halloween stamp set and the Witches’ Brew Designer Series Paper and had to play with my new goodies. :o)

There is a trick to adding layers to this card and still have the flip/flop work. I futzed around and got the job done but Mary Brown has an excellent video on how to do it easily. Check her video out.

The Witches’ Brew Designer Series Paper is just one of the exciting products found in the new Holiday catalog. If you want a catalog to pour over and make a list and check it twice before placing your order with me, just send me an email with your address, phone number, and best time to call you. I want to have a conversation with you about how you can get the catalog totally FREE!
